EXEMPLAR BLOG: Act II scene iii

SEE THE EXEMPLAR BLOG BELOW:

WHEN REDOING BLOGS WRITE: Italian first name, Your last name, class period, and FINAL DRAFT

Friar Lawrence is a wise and generous man. He has a vast knowledge in the power of herbs and is a fine apothecary. He once told me about the how herbs have fine qualities and healing powers – even ones who seem to be the most fatal. He said that too much of anything, even something good, can be dangerous when misused. It is hard to believe that our Mother Earth can produce so many plants that can both aid and destroy us! Friar Lawrence's intelligence is astounding; his exceeds mine, even with the amount of education I have received in my earlier years. Friar Lawrence is the most selfless man I know. Whenever I call upon him, he always seems to have time to listen to my worries and advise me on such matters. He never does anything in haste, and I can only believe that he is truly the best person to visit. I have called on Friar several times throughout my lifetime – he has always managed to lift me out of any conflict I have had. I know that he will never share any of our secrets. He is trustworthy and never have I witnessed an act where he has violated one's trust. Almost every citizen in Verona knows the Friar, and I am sure all of Verona will agree with me as well on Friar's character.

Where are they now??

In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout and Jem have inherited a legacy of values from their father, as did many other people in Maycomb County.

Project the characters into the future, 10 years after the novel has ended.

Ask yourself: Where have they ended up? What lessons have they learned? What have they chosen to do with their lives? How have their past  experiences affected their future?

Guidelines:
·         Use whatever tone/tense you would like
·         Discuss at least 3 characters from the novel
·         Select a style to write in: the point of view of a particular character, a dialogue, a letter, a journal entry, a newspaper article, or basic paragraph form.
·         Should be at least 2 paragraphs in length

"Children of the Mountains" and TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

Atticus told Scout that “the Ewell’s had been a disgrace to Maycomb for generations...They were people, but they lived like animals” (40).  Readers find out that the Ewells live on the corner of the town garbage dump, often living without food, clean clothing, or money.  This is quite similar to the families viewed in “A Hidden America: Children of the Mountains.”
Mayella Ewell accuses an innocent man, of a horrible crime. This is a harsh, mean action, which would lead a reader to thinking that she is a terrible person. But, even though Mayella lies on the witness stand, she still can be seen as a sympathetic character. Perhaps one of the most shocking things about Mayella is that she is different from the rest of her family. She “[looks] as if she [tries] to keep clean” and has a flower garden that is “cared for as tenderly as if [it] belonged to Maudie Atkinson” in their otherwise disgusting yard (179) (171). This shows her kindness and thoughtfulness.
Knowing this, why should readers sympathize (as Atticus does) with Mayella Ewell?
Why do you think she makes the decisions she makes in relation to going along with the trial?
What strategies does the author use to make sure readers will feel some sympathy toward her? Do you?

"Incident" by County Cullen

Once riding in old Baltimore,
    Heart-filled, head-filled with glee,
I saw a Baltimorean
    Keep looking straight at me.
Now I was eight and very small,
And he was no whit bigger,
And so I smiled, but he poked out
His tongue, and called me, "Nigger."
I saw the whole of Baltimore
    From May until December;
Of all the things that happened there
    That's all that I remember.

What influence(s) has the white child had that would lead him to speak this way to another child? Explain.

How/where does the mood of the poem change? Why?

What does the speaker mean when he says "he saw all of Baltimore" once he was called a "nigger"? What could this mean?

Which young characters in TKAM does this poem connect to (text-to-text)? Explain this connection using evidence from both works.

The case of the Jena 6 took place in 2006.

"Six black students at Jena High School in Central Louisiana were arrested in December 2006 after a school fight in which a white student was beaten and suffered a concussion and multiple bruises. The six black students were charged with attempted murder and conspiracy. They face up to 100 years in prison without parole. The fight took place amid mounting racial tension after a black student sat under a tree in the schoolyard where only white students sat. The next day three nooses were hanging from the tree"

React to the film.  Be sure to discuss your thoughts, feelings and conerns.  What THEMES are present?  This response should be 5-6 sentences in length.

Reaction to "A Raisin in the Sun"

What is your reaction to the play "A Raisin the Sun"? What did you learn about relationships? Dreams? Conflicts of Expectations?  Be specific.

Due to the changes in society since 1959, many people feel that A
Raisin in the Sun does not accurately portray the African-American
family of today.  For this reason, some people want to drop it from the English curriculum. What are your thoughts on this suggestion?

The Conflict Between Expectations

After completing the worksheet provided, write a paragraph about your discussion below.

What expectations do you have for yourself? What expectations do others (friends and family) have for you?  How does the differences in expectations create conflict?   Where have you seen a conflict of expectations in "A Raisin in the Sun"?  How could these conflicts be resolved?

Explain ( 5-7 sentence minimum)
