I really like Kiana's poem because it clearly shows the emotion of fear about the trail. She used lines from both chapters and made then blend very well, which helped make her point clear what the poem is about. The repetition of the line "A nightmare was upon us" puts emphasis on that line to show how fear is the major theme in this poem. This poem is very creative and well though out.
I agree with Carlye when I say that I really like Kiana's poem due to the distinct message of fear among the people of Maycomb. Although each line from the poem was taken from different chapters, the poem has a fluency which contributes to the clarity of the message of fear. Through this poem I can understand that the people of Maycomb fear this trial and the effects it may cause. The people of Maycomb are both nervous and scared for what the trial is about to bring, shown through the repetitive line, "A nightmare was upon us". The repetition of the line "A nightmare was upon us" contributes to the clarity of the message the poem gives, which is fear. I believe that for all of these reasons and more, this shows how and why this poem is well thought out and can communicate well with its readers.
Like Emma and Carlye both say that they enjoy Kiana's poem. The lines she choice to include in her poem, set a mood to the poem. Kiana's poem has a scary, eery mood to it due to repetition of the line " A nightmare was upon us" and also by the other lines such as " His face killed my joy." The poem reflects these chapters in To Kill A Mockingbird because men were going after someone Atticus felt the need to protect! By Atticus doing this, he was putting himself and his family in danger! Good job Kiana!!!

I really like Emily's poem because even though the lines are from different parts of the book, they really flow together in the poem. The lines make sense together and accurately display a conflict. It is clear that she spent time looking for lines that made the poem interesting and generally displayed the same mood. This poem is about someone being scared for Atticus because he might get hurt and the lines clearly express the persons concerns and fear. I very much enjoyed reading this poem.
Olivia Barbulescu Emily's poem accurately displays the conflict between Atticus and all of the people who do not want he to defend for Tom Robinson in the court case. Although these things were not said at the exactly same time, they display a conflict and show the characterization of Atticus as calm, collected, but still firm.

Mike Salvatori I like this poem because it uses many different lines that come together and make sense. The line "A Nightmare was upon us" seems to be an important line because it has been repeated through many poems. This person uses the jail as the nightmare upon them.

Brian Ganis Pd-3 I also used a similar portion of your poem. Carlye did a great job of selecting specific lines that compliment the overall poem. The message of this poem seams to be racism and Conformity. Unbeknownst to the white mob Tom Robinson was aware of the whole situation and was cowering behind closed doors.

I like Carlye's poem because it fully expresses the conflict between Atticus and the angry mob and how they all wanted to kill Tom Robinson, it also expresses how Scout stood up for Jem by kicking the man who hurt him. Carlye wisely chose creative sentences from the novel to make her poem come to life and stride towards the scenes in the book and what their true meanings are.

Overall it is a very good poem and Olivia did a good job choosing and placing the sentences she chose the way she did.- Max Uretta
I chose to reply to Olivias poem because she captures the events of the chapter in such few words that the reader can picture the tone the author has set. The key words such as "nightmare", "trouble", and "fake peace" all indicate an important event the children will have to face that wont be easy for them. The fluency of this poem is able to make the reader believe it was all included in one paragraph of To Kill a Mockingbird. Olivia's focus on the key words was valued because it made the poem create a distinctive setting and tone in the readers mind.
I liked Olivias poem because it used lines from complete different parts to set a mood and tell a story to the readers. Olivia picked short lines to create and send a strong message that reflected the events and feelings of characters over that day and night.
Poem Atticus was sitting propped against the front door. He was sitting in one of his office chairs, and he was reading. We saw Atticus look up from his newspaper. "Go home Jem" he said "Take Scout and Dill home". Atticus got up for his chair, but he was moving slowly, like an old man. I was beginning to notice a subtle change in my father these days. I assumed Atticus was going to give us hell for not going home, but I was wrong. Atticus reached out and massaged Jem's hair, his one gesture of affection.
Daniella Lagani I like this poem because it clearly summarizes Atticus in just a few lines. I like how it shows how Atticus is getting older and the kids realize how old he is getting. He also mentioned Atticus' one act of affection which is to message Jem's hair.
“No, we don’t have mobs and that nonsense in Maycomb,” Said Atticus “The Ku Klux Klan’s gone.” Aunt Alexandra protested I had minded Aunty, Jem didn’t hear her. Aunt Alexandra sipped coffee and radiated waves of disapproval. “But son, you’ll understand folks a little better when you’re older,” “Don’t say I haven’t told you.”
Chris G Period 7- I replied to this poem because it does two things. First, it resembles a conflict between the Finch's and the Klu Klux Klan, even though that is not true. Also, she made the poem really blend in smoothly together, like it was meant to all be one poem.
Jackie Dalfonso Period 6- I like this poem because it flows nicely, even these parts could of not come from the same page. This poem is also nicely detailed as well, like it shows how aunt alexandra tries to hide the bad things in life from the children. good Job Danielle! :)
Jem It wasn’t a – A gang She won’t let him alone about Tom Robinson. She almost said Atticus was disgracin’ the family. Scout . . . I’m scared Scared About Atticus Somebody might hurt him He’s all right, let’s go home. I just wanted to see where he was
Mr. Finch slowly awoke Bit by bit without a word He never ate desserts He liked to walk but He's takin' the car Lemme tell you something' Ain't ever seen anybody do that.
Gabriella B (period3)- I really like this poem!! I think it characterizes Atticus accurately. I like the lines chosen from the 2 chapters and put them together in this poem.
Harrison S. - Period 7 I like this poem because it shows, with some background knowledge of the book, that even thought Atticus is so respectful and instils good ideas and morals in the kids he likes to do things for himself and if that means being different thats okay. I also like how lines from separate instances were connected.
Sam O period 6 Jem heard me Atticus light went out It will all be over by tomorrow maybe You know they'll walk among themselves You have 15 seconds to get them outta here
Sydney Mueller (Period 3)- “Every mob in every little Southern town is always made up of people you know-doesn’t say much for them does it”-Atticus You know they talk among themselves I began to feel seat gathering at the edges of my hair; I could stand anything but a bunch of people looking at me I thought he would have a fine surprise, but his face killed my joy Shadows became substance as lights revealed solid shapes moving toward the jail door As they had come, in ones and twos the men shuffled back to their ramshackle cars The full meaning of the night’s events hit me and I began crying
Gabriella B (period3)- Scout I had minded Aunty I walked home with Dill Dill and I spent our Sundays creeping around in Deer’s Pasture I said I didn’t think it’d be nice to bother him I bade my aunt and brother goodnight Later on, I dressed quickly Don’t you remember me? I’m Jean Louise Finch All looking at me, their mouths half open Entailments are bad Entailments seemed all right enough for living room talk
Dill was over; Jem and i were on the floor reading. "Well, ask him to come in" Dill and i kicked Jem's football in the pasture for a while. Jem shrieked and tried to catch me, but i had a lead on him and Dill. Atticus got up from his chair, but he was moving slowly, like an old man. He thrust his head around the connecting door. Mr. X Billups rode by on a mule and waved to us. We parted before supper. After dinner, we stopped by for Dill and went to town.
Atticus was sitting propped up against the door. Four dusty cars came in We saw Atticus look up from his newspaper He closed it, folded it deliberately, dropped it in his lap, and pushed his hat to the back of his head. He seemed to be expecting them “He in there, Mr. finch?” a man said. “He is, and he’s asleep. So don’t wake him up.” A Nightmare was upon us.
i like this poem because it characterizes atticus and shows how calm and melo he is. it also shows how brave he is so people could here the truth by protecting tom robinson an african american.
I really like Nickdogs poem. It caught my eye as I glanced through the other poems. If I hadent read this book I wouldnt have even known that these lines were picked from two different chapters and put together.
Daniel Quinn Period 4- I like this poem not only because of the importance of the quotes that were used in it, but the way the quote's blended together. The make the poem sound like an actual poem, not just a few quotes put together.
A nightmare was upon us Violently This is Maycomb Fake peace Ku Klux This is Maycomb Ramshackle cars Peculiar thing This is Maycomb Disgrace Disapproval This is Maycomb Gang of wild animals Greasy faced children This is Maycomb
I like this poem because it all ties together and it shows what is happening in Maycomb. The lines used from the book help describe the way Maycomb was during this time.
Scott Bartman- period 3 I like how you use repetition to stress how maycomb is a place with its own identity and it is different and more peaceful then nearby towns.
Jackie Dalfonso Period 6- Jem, Scout and dill sneak out, to see where Atticus was. ATticus not in his office which is In the bank. I like kevins poem because it used the repeating line "Scout I'm scared". It showed that the characters are scared of what is going in their lines and more then one thing is frightening them. - Federica Balboni
I like this poem because of the repetition to enhance something. By saying "Scout I'm scared," this shows emotion of a character. I also like this poem because it describes a major event in the chapter. -James Delia
I like this poem because it uses emphasis on "scout I'm scared." It shows the emotion of the characters during this scary moment on the story. Nick Nelson
In Maycomb, grown men stood outside in the front yard for only two reasons: death and politics. They all seemed to be talking at once. “Yeah, but Atticus aims to defend him. That’s what I don’t like about it.” You know how they do when they get all shinnied up. With that he put his hat on and went out the back door. The jail was Maycomb’s only conversational piece. This was believable. They were after you, weren’t they? They wanted to get you, didn’t they? Nearer my God to thee. “That gang of wild animals can be stopped, simply because they’re still humans.”
I think conflict was portrayed very well through this poem, showing a tone of fear and aggressiveness. From reading this I could tell something wasn't right in that situation which would be the conflict. -Michelle Aguirre
Tristan Votta Period 6 chapter 15: A nightmare was upon us We saw a solitary light burning in the distance Shadows became substance as lights revealed solid shapes The men hid from view The men talked in near whispers Sleepy-eyed men who seemed unused to late hours.
Chapter 16: Wild animals can be stopped, simply because they’re still human …Radiated waves of disapproval He that cometh in vanity departeth in darkness The Devil was quoting Scripture for his own purposes It’s all over the town this morning.

Matthew MIles period 7 I like J.T's poem because I liked how his poem revolved around mysteriousness and the thought of what would happen next. I like this poem because it really shows what is actually going on during this time period.
Conflict It had been a placid week little it seemed we had peace one evening after supper a nightmare was upon us "There's some men outside the yard, they want you to come out." Atticus called, "go back in the house." Men surrounded Atticus "I don't look for any trouble, but I can't guarantee there won't be any." This, is Maycomb
I liked Michelles poem because it created a story all together and was basically a summary of that night using little words and lines. Readers would be able to tell what was happening by reading this poem without even knowing what the book was about. Anyone who reads Michelles poem would sense a mood of fright!
Atticus had said it, They did the best they could with the sense they had Those were our friends They were after you I’m scared Go on and leave him alone He never Killed Or Raped Are We Still too little? To help Because Those were our friends But last night he wanted to hurt you Had you covered all the time, Atticus That proves something— A gang of wild animals can be stopped, Simply because they’re still human
Keith Lometti period 7- His face killed my joy a flash of plain fear they must be cold-natured sullen looking, sleepy-eyed A nightmare was upon us I searched once more for a familiar face but I discovered a nightmare was upon us.
I liked Jacee's poem because although the sentences were from totally different parts of the chapters she put them together to create a mysterious feeling and the poem actually made sense. Keith Lometti period 7
i like how jacee's poem seemed like a dialogue between two people and then had narration in the end. like keith said it was very mysterious and it probably took a lot of work to take such random lines and piece them together the way she did. carly rutkovsky period 7
Kyle Lometti- period 3- A nightmare was upon us In Maycomb men only stood outside in the front yard for two reasons; death, and politics In ones and twos men got out of cars lights revealed solid shapes moving toward the jail door "He in there Mr. Finch? a nightmare was upon us
Tristan Votta period 6 I liked Kyle's poem because of his repetition of the line, "A nightmare is upon us." I also liked where he used the lime breaks in his poem to put more emphasis on certain words or phrases.
Abdullah Ahmad Period 3 I seem to like Kyle Lometti's poem because of his repetion of the line "A nightmare is upon us." Also how he used his words to include a lot of empahsis and variety.
Matthew Miles-Period7 The first time today Dill came to us I asked Dill “Why don’t you come over” Thereafter Dill kissed me when Jem wasn’t looking He said we were going to get married When he got enough money I love Dill.
The fake peace that prevailed If I’d like to Beat him up one time And Kick his shin Atticus Taught me Something I was slowly drying up, wondering what idiocy I had committed Then he did a peculiar thing, he squatted down and took me by both shoulders Atticus tried to stifle a smile Look’s like it’s over Let’s Return Home

It was a gala occasion They hafta try him in public Wouldn't be right if they didn’t I’m quite aware of that Yeah, but Atticus aims to defend him, thats what I don’t like about it Four Negroes rose and gave us their front row seats But around here, you have one drop of Negro blood and that makes you black They don’t belong anywhere
“Hey Mr. Cunningham…” "I'm Jean Louise Finch" “Don’t you remember me?” “I go to school with Walter…” “He’s your boy ain’t he?” “He’s a good boy…” “Tell him hey for me, won’t you…” “I’ll tell him you said hey little lady” “Let’s get going boys”
A week of peace together was, the calm before the storm. First sign of trouble had sheriff Tate out for Tom. Atticus pushes back on Lynch mob while Jem grows from boy to man. Scout is innocent and respectful. Men shuffle to their ramshackle cars. Friendship over rides enemies. Atticus shows Jem approval.
He was rich chocolate with flaring nostrils and beautiful teeth. Greasy faced children popped the whip through the crowd. Their wives like em' to tickle em' with their beards. Atticus reached out and massaged Jems hair, his one gesture of affection. "Hey, Mr.Cunningham" I beat him up one time but he was real nice about it. I was slowly drying up, wondering what idiocy I had committed. I thanked her by sticking out my tongue at it.
Daniel Quinn Period 4- A nightmare was upon us four dusty cars moving in a slowly line shadows became substance doors slammed engines coughed and they were all gone a nightmare no more
Atticus Pushed my way through every mob in every little southern town. Atticus remained where he was "You can turn around and god home again, Walter" Not thinking of budging The nights events hit me.
Scott Bartman- period 3 I go to school with Walter might not like it I intended to kick his shin but aimed to high Do you really think so? I'm goin' anyway, hear? Jem in his old age had taken to his room found him in his room, on the bed deep in thought Jem had outgrown the treehouse
Conor McGillicuddy - Period 4 - I enjoyed this poem because it has subtle humor in the first three lines, but shows the complex evolution of Jem's personality change. The shift in Jem's charcter is shown by his sudden withdrawl from his family and community.
A nightmare was upon us In ones and twos Men got out of their cars He’s asleep Don’t awake him You know what we want, Mr. Finch You can go home A nightmare was upon us Do you really think so? Go home I’ll send him home Don’t touch him I was surprised to see him fall back That’ll do Scout Lets get going boys A nightmare was upon us
James highlighted Atticus's parenting skills for the chapter perfectly. Atticus would set and example for them, even in a difficult situation and made sure is son was always proper. James also used repetition to express how bad the situation could have been if Atticus was not present at the Maycomb jail. Also the would protect his son distinctively. He respected his daughter enough to allow her to have a conversation at an unlikely time. James picked line that showed so many key aspects of the event.
"The kim klux is gone said. The attics. Illneverce back. Heck we've gotten one put punementry "I've walked home with dill and returned in time to over hear Atticus saying to aunty it's unfair of southern womanhood.
Everybody's appetite was delicate this morning Atticus placed his fork beside his knife and pushed his plate aside. "So it took an eight-year-old child to bring 'em to their senses, didn't it?" "You children made Walter Cunningham stand in my shoes for a minute." Aunt Alexandra stared him into silence. Mr. Dolphus Raymond lurched by He's got a Co-Cola bottle full of whiskey in there
Atticus Would flee to his office directly after dinner Hes not going to stop til the truths told Aims to defend him Whether he wanted to or not Try to go to sleep Tom They wont bother you anymore
Dill hey I’m not scared… I’ll runoff again-! He said we would We never did I’ll run off again They didn’t want me with them. lets get us a baby I’ll run off again
