Walter Lee Younger Jr:
ambitious; loves his family; longs to prove his manhood by owning his own business; 30’s

  1. Carlye Uretta Period 4-
Lena: I also said she was religious and very bosy and confident. I did not say she believed in strengths of the family because most of the quote was really about religion. I said that she was an educated African American.

Walter: I also said that he takes pride in what he does. I said that he was not educated because he talked in slang and i said he seemed annoyed or angry by the tone used.

Travis: I said that he was also a very educated kid. By the way he talked it made him seem very smart so i thought he had to be in his older teens but he is really a very smart young kid and very mature for his age. It also seemed like he didnt really care about African Americans by the tone used. He seemed smug because he was so smart and like full of himself with his intelligence.

I feel like the sterotypes were right because most of the predicts were correct, but its sad that they are right because we shouldnt judge one person and think thats what every person like that is that way. Everyone is unique and shouldnt be judged just because someone else of the same race did something that wasnt liked or something along those lines. We all have opinions but it should be based on what we feel about one person individually and it should not effect the way we look at other people. For example ever since 9/11 people think that muslum people are out to get us and such bad people, but in reality not all of those people are like that. We judged them because of what some people of the same race did, which is not right.

Travis: I predicted he was a kid, somewhat educated but spoke a little slang and inproper, he was black and brave.

Lena: I predicted she was an older woman that was very well educated, african american, and has strong beliefs and a leader. She is inspirational and religious.

Beneatha: I predicted she was educated, teenager, she isn't a follower, she is very courages and speaks her beliefs.

I was somewhat sterotype when predicting about the characters because typically the African Americans would be less educated then the whites, so how they spoke is how I knew who they were. If they talked proper or not. But alot of the african americans were educated. I dont feel right about being sterotype because its mean and doesn't make me or people always right. I feel wrong because alot of the african americans were well educated and talked very proper.

  3. Nicole D'Annibale (period 4)
Lena: I predicted that she is "in charge", religious, and believes in the strength of family
I said that she was African American and educated.

Travis: I predicted that he is a teenager because of the way he talked but he is actually a young child and mature for his age. I thought he was a white kid who didn't want to learn about the history of African Americans.

Beneatha: I predicted that she was educated and courageous and interested in her family roots. My prediction was mostly correct.

I feel that the stereotypes that I used to prejudge the characters were correct and wrong at the same time. People shouldn't be judged on their race compared to their education, which is stereotypical. I don't feel right about my stereotypes and I don't think other people should use them either.

  4. Rebecca O. Period 4:

Walter: I said that Walter was younger, frustrated, believes no one cares what he has to say, outspoken and uneducated. When in reality Walter is ambitious and loves his family, he's also in his 20's.
Travis: I said Travis was uneducated, wants to teach, wants African-Americans to have an education. I also thought he was older than 10, he hopes for the future; so I wasn't wrong when I thought he wanted African-American history to be taught in school.
Asagai: I said he's educated, believede in African Americans and he's passionate and brave. So I was not incorrect.

  5. Scott Bartman- period 4,

    1. Benetha seems like a woman who has doubts about religon and is fustrated. She is actually an ambitous person and she plans to be a doctor. I stereotyped her as a underachiever and someone who didnt care that much because she sounded like she dobuted her religion.

    2. Walter seems fustrated and like he blambes his problems on other people. He actually is trying hard and loves his family.

    3. Travis cares about his history and seems happy to be able to learn it. I was right because he is usually energetic and cares about his family and culture.

  6. Sydney Mueller (Period 3)- I chose the character Asagai to analyze, and my predictions were close to the truth. Asagai is described as a "modern" African American man that wants to use his heritage to his advantage. My impression of the character was that he is in his 20’s and stands up for what is going on. I also assumed that he is educated because he knows about his heritage. The stereotypes I used to judge Asagai is the way he talked, he talked as if he was one of the revolutionary African Americans. I felt that this was a step in the right direction because he is influencing the people around him as well as himself.

Another character I chose to analyze was Lena, a mother who wants her family to continue the catholic beliefs. My first impression was that she wants her daughter to believe in God and was disgusted when she found out that her daughter didn’t believe. She was frustrated that she hadn’t taught her daughter properly and afraid that she would be in danger. The actual analysis was that Lena is a deeply religious wife who believes in the strength of family, which isn’t that far off from mine. The stereotypes I used to judge Lena was that as soon as an opportunity opened up for her husband, she took it and used it to her advantage. Also, she told her daughter that she has to believe in God as long as she lives in her house. This made me make the assumption that she wants to have a strong family and have a religious background. I was happy about this because I have somewhat the same believes, except mine are “modernized”.

The last character I chose was Beneatha. Beneatha is portrayed as an ambitious lady who wants to believe something different than her family, but still be accepted. She is similar to her brother because she’s interested in her African roots and wants to research them. I thought that Beneatha was an Atheist, but wasn’t a bad person in general. She was getting annoyed at her mother for forcing her to believe something different then what she wanted to. She’s frustrated that God gets all the credit for man made miracles, which is understandable. The stereotypes I used to judge Beneatha was the way she talked, with pride and annoyance. She still believes that you have to be a good person to live, and not to be disrespectful. I respect Beneatha for this because it takes courage to stand up to your family and announce that she wants to believe in something different.

  7. Conor McGillicuddy - Period 3 -

My impression of Ruth Younger is very similar to the brief description of her because I have already read the book. Ruth is a endearing mother who wants nothing but the best for her beloved son, Travis. Also, Ruth is very controlling and tries to ruin Walter's big dream of opening up his store.

My view on Travis is that he is the child of the play. He is impressionable and he acts based on what he sees. He is a bit naive and he is still getting acclimated to the world.

Beneatha is possibly the strongest character in the book. She is accepting to new ideas and her world view is open. Against her mother's ideas, she rejects the belief of a God and makes bold statements that conflict with other people. She represents the new generation. She has fresh ideas about the world and she says things that make the stale, stagnant, older generation stir with anger. She goes against the social normalities of the world and is possibly a self-reflection of Lorraine Hansberry.

The vast majority of the characters in the play are black people and there are common stereotypes about black people. Stereotypes are not true and are quite vicious. This play shows how equal people are and how people are all the same. Asagai shows African heritage and how all people have their heritage and roots.

I feel that stereotypeing is a terrible thing to do. It takes the humanity out of people and lumps certain people with certain ideas. Most stereotypes are wrong and have little to no factualr basis. Ignorant people create lies that hurt people and mar respected beliefs.

I did stereotype a little but sometimes the stereotypes did apply to them. Stereotypes are based on some truth although it is usually minimal. I do not think sterotypes should be used but they are and they always will be because it has become a part of things we believe and who we are.

    1. Travis Younger- I agree with this description beacuse his a energetic boy trying to find his place in the world.

2.Lena Younger- She is very religious and I agree with this description. No matter what she thinks of God.

    3. Asagaqi- I agree with this desription because his name is an African American name and he follows were he came from.

2.One sterotype is that all black women believe in God very deeply.

3.I think its a wrong sterotype because some women don't believe in God that deeply.

  10. David Tolve period 4: Walter sounded like he was middle aged and was angry with the way he was being treated but loved being with he is family and was educated

Travis: Sounded like 15 years old and was fustrated and souned alot older then what he really is hes 10 and has pride in his family

Lean: Sounded middle aged and was also fustrated and educated but really shes very educated and belives in a strong family

I used the sterotypes of listening to thier tone of voice and how they were taking about a topic

  11. Richard Hoffberg Period 4

Walter=I thought Walter was an uneducated, grumpy man. He really was a man in his 30's that wanted be sucessful.

Asagai=I thought he was a educated middle age man that was like W.E.B. DuBois, he wanted all colored people to have the same rights as whites. In the book the really was a man that just wanted to keep his heritage.

Travis= Travis seemed like a young uneducated man. He was an energetic ten year old with optimistic hopes for his family.

Lastly Beneatha=Lastly Beneatha acted like a young educated women. I was accurate except I didn't say she wanted to be a doctor and like her roots in Africa.

I'm embarrsed that I could accuartely predict what were like, with my sterotypes.

    Travis an uneducated young boy
Lena A somewhat older woman who is very inspirational and has strong beliefs
Beneatha I tought she was an young strong woman I feel like each of my predicttions were in the same general area but some were unfair now that ive seen the movie

  13. Kiana Comizio Period 7

My initial impression of Lena Younger was very similar to the actual description of her. I predicted that she was very religious and confident. This is because in her quote she told her daughter that under her roof, you had to worship God. It seemed like she was very strong about her opinion and wasn't willing to listen to her daughters ideas.

When I read Beneatha's quote I predicted that she was educated, intelligent, and independent. This is because she didn't speak in slang and she freely expressed her ideas no matter other people thought. She is different from her family because since she is education she has been exposed to new ideas and ways of thinking.

I thought that Travis younger was a child, but a teenager rather than a 10 year old. He sounded much more mature and educated than a ten year old. I predicted that he was a white kid not interested in learning about African American roots.

Over all I think stereotyping is unfair because all people are different no matter what the belief about the "group" they belong to. People are often stereotyped based on religion, race, ethnicity, dialogue, ect. Even though some of my stereotypes happen to be right, some of them were also wrong. At the risk of being wrong, you definitely shouldn't stereotype someone because most of the time your probably and once you already have a general idea about someone your not giving them a chance. You'll never actually get to know who that person actually is.

  14. Chris G Period 7-

Beneatha: I predicted Beneatha a be a young educated black women who didn't particularly care for her religion. This was partly true because Beneatha was educated and she was black.

Travis: I predicted Travis to be a young black school boy who was partly educated. He did not speak with a heavy slang as the others. I was correct in this prediction because Travis was a young African American who went to school.

Walter Jr.: I predicted that Walter would be an angry man in his early 20's. This was also partially right in the sense that Walter was angry in a depressed kind of way. He did not like living in his current conditions.

When predicting the personality of these people, I thought about the way they spoke, which would determine their education level. I also used what these people talked about to determine their age. I finally looked at their names, which did help determine their race.

When you first meet someone, you can't use stereotypes to figure out whether you like them or not. But when you are given just something they said, its kind of hard not to. When you are in this type of situation and you are trying not to use stereotypes, you could imagine this person to be anbody. But I just don't really like using stereotypes to figure out people, because its just not respectful.

Travis Younger- my impression of him at first was, he obviously doesn't like to get up for school. I predict he will be able to go to a better school.

Walter Lee Younger Jr- from my first impression,he is also not a morning person. He is not satisfied with his breakfast either. and also grumpy. My prediction he will start an argument with someone about the finances. He's hoping to create a business to get them out of being broke.

Ruth Younger- My impression, she seems responsible, and takes care of her family. She deals with the morning drama. I predict that she will get to make the final decision on how the finances are spent, because she is smart and responsible.

The first character I picked is Travis Younger because he symbolizes what's yet to come. During a hard tim efor the family he is able to be free and bring comfort in his naiveness. By being happy and energetic he is able to help the family think of better times.

The second character I picked is Ruth Younger because she symbolizes the unity of the family. The family is brought together because of her idea of what she wants them to be. She also does everything with her family in mind, and never for herself.

My third character is Walter Younger because he always has good intentions for the family. Even though some of his plans might not always work, he always has good intentions. And because he has good intentions, he will also bring unity to the family.

Lena: When I first read the quote, I thought Lena was a middle aged woman who was very religious and direct. I also thought she was uneducated based off of the slang she used, so my prediction was very close to the way Lena actually is.
Beneatha: I said that Beneatha was very confident in herself and educated based on her grammar and vocabulary. I didn’t really get that she was interested in her African roots by the quote but I understand how she would be.
Travis: I thought Travis was a teenage boy who was serious and appreciative, but he is really a ten year old boy who is very mature and energetic. By the way Travis expressed himself he seemed older and slightly educated (due to his age and use of slang).
To prejudge the characters I looked at the way they were speaking to see how educated they were; either with slang or proper grammar. The way someone speaks really represents how educated they are because if you do not speak correctly I feel that you aren’t able to articulate yourself as well as some other people can. I also determined if characters were outspoken or not based off of exclamations. I don’t really like using stereotypes because I feel a lot of people have been misjudged in life and it is unfair because those people didn’t do anything to be stereotyped against.

  18. Carly Rutkovsky period 7

My impression of Mama was that she was very religious which I was right about, but also a strong leader because she was leading what I thought was a sermon at church. My impression of Walter Lee Jr. was that he was a teenager who was frustrated about segregation and his thoughts not being heard, meanwhile he really is a full grown adult who was fighting with his wife. My impression of Asagai was that he was a very well educated man and advocate for the civil rights movement, but he really is just trying to preserve the black commitee's Nigerian customs.

I used stereotypes such as African Americans being very religious and spiritual, as well as very outspoken and opinionated, and poorly educated.

I feel as though stereotypes are all around us and make everyone be a little judgmental and close minded when first meeting people. I don't know exactly when or how stereotypes came to be but they can be very hurtful and when they are brought up can tend to arouse a lot of people. Stereotypes have also affected how people who are targeted think of themselves, causing them to take much further and severe actions. For example, my family friends' daughters who are both jewish were always teased for having big noses especially since they were jewish. After years of being tormented, this past year they both went under the knife and got nose jobs despite the fact their noses were never really that bad. Stereotypes are unfair and no one deserves to be prejudged, and I feel bad for doing it if I say I don't like it when it happens to people I care about or myself.

Travis Younger: My first impression of Travis was that he was a young boy who didn't want to get up for school. Very happy even though things weren't so great in his house.

The other character I chose was Walter Lee he seems like a very caring man who wants a good future for his family and tries really hard to make everyone happy like Travis. He also takes money very serious but for a good cause.

Lena Younger: Seems like a very hard working woman, who also wants her family to be happy.

I think stereotype is very unfair it makes people feel out of place; not them selves.

    1. i choose travis younger and my first impression was he lives in a poor family. aloso that he was always full of joy. when i first saw the quote i thought he was a young boy.

    2. i also choose Walter Lee who is a middle aged man with intellegence. he makes money and he takes his job serious.

    3. the last character i choose was Ruth younger she is all about family. i really like the way this character symbolized family.

I dont like sterotypes because i feel this way because you shouldnt judge people by their height, gender, haircolor, or race. everyone is their own unique person. people today need to learn how to not judge people because of their race, skin color..

Lena - I said she was proud and strong-willed too. I also added that she seems smart and independent.

Travis - I said he was very energetic too. He seems like he has a lot of hope for the future especially when they will get the money from his grandfather's death.

Walter - I said he was very proud of what he does and he loves his family too. I also said he has a slight slang and he was acting as if he was angered or annoyed by the person he was talking to.

From the way they spoke, I prejudged them as African American. I do think this stereotype isn't good because it shows that African Americans didn't have much education at that time which was very unfair.

  22. Mike G period 3-
Lena Younger- I predicted that she was a religious person who believes in and has faith in god. I also predicted that she was an older woman who believed in rights for her race and trying to lead people to stand up for their own rights.

Walter Younger- I predicted that Walter was an older man that wanted to be a successful husband and father. I also predicted that he loved his family very much and tried to make them feel good and provide for them the best that he could.

Travis- I predicted that he was a typical little kid that loves to play and run around. It seems like he has a great hope for the future because of the money they will inherit.

I prejudiced these characters by the way that they spoke. African Americans weren't very educated so they didn't speak in proper English. This just reiterates the lack of rights that African Americans had as a group of people. It doesn't make me feel good that I prejudiced in this way, but during the time period, that is just what life was like.

  23. Melanie Straface period6-
Lena: when I read the quote I predicted that Lena was very religious and confident about what she talks about. I also thought that she was an older woman because she reflected on her past.

Travis: I thought that Travis was a young boy who was happy and grateful even though his family doesn’t have a lot of things.

Beneatha: I predicted that she was the most educated out of the family based on her vocabulary in the quote. I also predicted that she wasn’t a religious person.

For my predictions I used the stereotypes of most black people in that time period. I used the stereotype that most of them were uneducated and religion was important. I don’t like using stereotypes to identify people because it causes us to make quick judgments about people that we don’t really know.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ariel C Period 6:
Lena: My initial impression of Lena was that she was old, religious, black and proud. This was almost exactly who she really is.

Asagai: My first impression was that he was African-American, that he was educated and that he believed in change. This was very close to his actual character. Asagai is a fellow student along with Beneatha and he is focusing his studies on the heritage of his Nigerian people.

Beneatha: My initial impression was that she was young, educated and atheist. She is actually ambitious and studying to be a doctor. She has to find a way to express herself.

I was very close with most of my first impressions. I used the way the person talked to judge what they were like. Lena talked very proudly and about God so I knew she was older. Asagai spoke very proper so I knew he was educated. Beneatha spoke with passion and properly so I knew she was educated. I judged pretty well.

  25. Roma S(pd. 4)….
Walter: I thought this character was a person that wasn’t educated due to the use of slang and he seemed to be a complainer and not care about others feelings. I also predicted that he was a teenager because the way he spoke was the way a younger person would speak. I was obviously wrong because Walter is a father and cares for his family’s success very much. Walter wants his son, Travis to have a better life than his wife Ruth and himself when he grows up.
Travis: I predicted that Travis was also a teenager, but white. The way I interpreted his quote was that he was being sarcastic about learning the past and history of Africans Americans. I was also wrong for this because he his part of a black family. Travis is also a dreamer and looks on his future when he receives the money from his grandfather’s life insurance.
Lena: I predicted that Lena was a mother, older, and in charge. She is strict, but always looks out for her family in their best interest. She is also very religious as shown when she defends God after Beneatha questions Him. I inferred her quotes correctly because she is the matriarch of the family and is very strong and proud for whom she is.

Sometimes, while predicting, I was going by stereotypes. Just cause I person uses slang doesn’t mean they are un educated. I know from experience that I don’t talk proper English when I’m with family or friends. Stereotypes could lead to the wrong message and cause damage to the minds of new generations. That is exactly happened with our society has years went by.

Lena Younger: I predicted her to be an older woman, who is very religious, and the head of the family, which is very similar to what she actually is.

Beneatha: I predicted that she was certainly more educated than the rest of the family because of her more sophisticated word choice. I also thought she was more educated because she questioned things, such as religion, as being false or insignificant.

Asagai: I predicted that he was also more educated than the other characters, because of his word choice.

One stereotype I came across was that all people how speak with a certain dialect, or use incorrect word choice are ignorant. However, they might not have had the same educational opportunities as other people, therefore it isn't their fault that they aren't as sophisticated.

walter- i predicted walter would be the least educated out of al the characters. i Predicted this because he uses a lot of slang when speaks.
Lena- i predicted she was a an older woman who is very religious, which is very much like who she really is.
travis- i predicted travis was a little boy because of the way he spoke and how was always happy even if things at home weren't great.

one stereotype is that people think if you use slang you are un educated. But that isn't true its dialect in which u speak that causes you to speak in slang. Its not your eduction.

  28. Shannon Zuccarelli. Period 6 -

Walter- I said Walter wants to always have things his own way and can get annoyed easily. I also said that he is uneducated in his family and didn't get to go to school.

Travis- I predicted that he was young and just wanted to be a kid and get treated like everyone else does. He is a kid and has to understand that things can't be perfect in his life and has to do things he doesn't want to.

Ruth- I said she is very caring and just wants what's best for her family so that they can have the best life they can considering the circumstances. She also isn't educated and is often outspoken by others.

I stereotyped the family as poor and just trying to get by one day at a time. I also stereotyped them as being uneducated and not knowing how to use proper English, but also a family who believed that family was important. I feel that stereotyping is a bad thing to do because often you can be wrong about what you think about a person when you first see them, and don't know anything about them until you get to know them better and know what they are going through in their lives.

Initially i expected walter to be a great provider, how ever from watching the play , my prediction is slightly inaccurate. I also assumed he was uneducated based on how he speaks but he did seem intelligent.
Lena younger at first sounded extremely religous but in the play she didn't act like it. Although based on the reaing and the poem, anyone could tel she was one of rhe ones in charge.
Frm the reading i assumed Beneatha to be employed and a provider, but strange enough she was a student living in a house with not a lot of money and a whole lot of fighting.

Travis- I predicted Travis as a very young boy who spoke with a slang. He seemed intelligent for his age.

Walter- I predicted him to be an angry middle aged man.

I predicted these characters by the way they spoke. I believed they were all black because of the way they spoke. I am not happy with the way I was prejudice about these people.

Ruth Younger: My prediction of Lena was correct because I predicted that she was a strong African American woman who was highly religious because she expressed her love and belief for god in the passage that we read and that lead me to believe that her belief for god was very strong. I used the stereotype that all black women believed strongly in god. I don't like the way that I judged Lena, because I know that not all black women believe in god.
Walter Lee Younger Jr: I predicted Walter Lee Younger Jr. to be someone who saves his money and I didn't predict him to be as outspoken as he was in the film. Walter is very passionate and believes strongly in what he believes in. He is spontaneous and wants to take all the risks in order to become successful. I didn't use any stereotypes in judging Walter.
Travis Younger: I didn't predict him to be as young as he was, he is 9 or 10, but I pictured him as a little bit older like 14 or 15 due to what he says. I learned that Travis is young but has a mature head and knows what's going on and doesn't want to act like everything's ok when it's not. I believe that he is very mature for his age because, like he said about working, most kids would want to play, but he knows how he is going to get money for things that he wants to do, and he knows that he has to earn it by himself. I didn't use any stereotype to judge Travis.

Lena- When I first read about Lena I could defiantly tell that she has a sense of authority. Also, with her second quote, she is a strong believer in God. What I thought is very similar to what that description of her is.
Asagai- After reading about Asagai I thought he was very smart because of the words he used and the fluency of his sentence, there was no slang used in his quote. It is clear that he got a good education. This is similar to the description of her.
Beneatha- Beneatha also talks like she received a good education, when she talks she doesn't speak with slang words. Also she doesn't seem religious. When her mom talks about God, she says that "God is just one idea I don't accept." The description of her says that she is interested in her roots which I didn't get from reading her quote.

I was prejudiced when reading the character quotes. Since some of the characters are better spoken than others, I thought that they were white, not black. It’s not right that I thought this. This proves that white people are not better spoken than black people; black people can speak just as well as white people.

  34. Lena: I thought Lena was a hopeful and loving person that only wanted what was best for her family. Basically Lena was a proud, strong-willed and deeply religious. Lena also believes in the strength of her family. Lena was a religious, family oriented women.

Travis- I predicted that Travis was a young boy who was very happy and wanted to be a kid. Travis only wants the best and doesn't like to be put down. He seems like a very happy kid who is always full of energy!

Walter Lee Younger Jr.- Walter seems like he is a easily angered man who likes to have everything his own way. He also is a very good father who wants things to be better for his family and has a dream of making things better!

When i was judging the characters off of what i knew about them, i was prejudging them because the ones that spoke in better english i thought were white and the ones that spoke in more slang-words i thought they were black because back then whites had a better education then the blacks so i was being stereotype to them.
I feel like people looked down on blacks a lot because they didn't have a lot of rights so people thought blacks were less equal then whites which makes me upset.

Lena- When I first read the quotes said by Lena I thought she was a faithful confident African American. My judgments of her were fairly correct. I just didn't know she was strong-willed.
Travis- When I first read his quote I thought he was older than 10. He seemed smart for his age.
Beneatha- From reading her quote, I though she was stubborn because she didn't believe in God, like her mother. But it turns out that she is ambitious.
The stereotypes I used to prejudge was that African Americans talked like they were uneducated in the 1950s. Also because of the slang they spoke. I feel bad that people are judged by stereotypes. I feel like that is just life. But I feel like people should get to know others before judging.

Walter Younger: I originally thought that Walter was a passionate and strong speaker who hated when people didn't listen to what he had to say. I also thought that Walter was younger.

Beneatha Younger: I thought that Beneatha was a strong woman who had a goal that would allow nothing to stop her. I also believed that she was a little stubborn.

Ruth Younger: I thought that Ruth was a very good person and a good mom.

The stereotypes I used to predict the characters was based on African American history. I always knew African Americans as strong people who were always determined to succeed. Based on this, I immediately thought that each of these characters were strong at heart and passionate and all wanted to fight for something they wanted. I believe that I predicted somewhat correct and somewhat not. I got an idea of each character correctly but not the whole idea.

  37. Alissa H 7th period said: 1. My first impression of Ruth was she cares about her son, she gets annoyed with having poor living conditions, she is outspoken and she does not have a good education. She is a middle aged wife.
    2. My first impression of Walter was he was mad about something with African Americans not being “good enough”.
    3. My first impression of Travis, the son of Ruth and Walter, he needs money for class. Also in his school they are learning about the history of segregation and the African Americans not having the same rights as the Whites.
    2. The stereotypes that I used were characteristics.
    3. I think Travis is sweet like caring and basically has a good relationship with the family. Ruth is definitely pro family, does her best to take care of her family as best as she can with what little they have. Walter is very caring towards his son because even though he didn’t have the money to give to Travis he still gave him what he needed.

Walter- I predicted that Walter was still decently young, and trying to do what’s best for his family. Now I know that my prediction of Walter is correct because he is a 30 year old man who wants to be able to support his family by in vesting in a liquor business with two other friends.

Travis- I guessed that Travis was a young African American boy in Elementary School. I also predicted that he wasn’t very aware of the struggles his family is dealing with because he is a young boy. Now reading some of the book, I know Travis a young boy, but he is some what aware of what his family is going through because he hears his parents talk about their struggles.

Ruth- I predicted Ruth was a young, independent/strong, loving woman. I predicted Ruth was a caring mother and wife that loves her family and wants her family to over come the struggles they are facing, economically and racially. The book so far has revealed Ruth is a young, loving/caring mother, who wants what is best for her family. Even though she wants what is best she’s unsure of how to accomplish her goal.

Although the stereotypes I used to prejudge the characters were correct, it was wrong of me to prejudge. I don’t believe people should judge others on how educated a person is or what their race is. This is like the saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” I believe that unless you know a person personally and have met them it is not right to stereotype and prejudge a person you don’t even know.

Travis Younger: when i first read the quotes i thought travis was an educated older teenager, or like in his 20's i never thought he would be ten years old, i also thought he would be white, sense he talked so properly.
Beneatha Younger: when i first read the quote i thought Bennie was a stubborn daughter, with a big attitude. when really she is just devoted to her studies and is confident.
Walter Lee Younger Jr: when i first read the quotes i thought walter was a educated teenager. i had no idea he would have been in his 50's or 60's. he loves his family and is strong willed.
i based a lot of my estimates on the way these characters spoke, because African Americans were less educated back in the 1950's they spoke in a lot of slag. i don't like the fact that i made assumptions like this, but they do follow what really happened in the 1950s

Lena: When I read the quote about Lena I thought she was an older woman, that was religious, and in charge of the family, and in a way I was correct about her being in charge. Lena is a woman that is proud of whom she is and wants the best for her family, and shows that by being strong.
Travis: I predicted that Travis was this black young boy that was uneducated. Instead Travis is this boy who doesn’t like to wake up in the mornings and is very energetic and mature about things.
Walter: I thought that Walter was a white teenage boy, and was learning about what African Americans did. For the meantime Walter is this older guy, who wants the best for his family, and an example would be when Travis needs 50 cents for school and his mom, Lena, wouldn’t give him the money, so Walter was thoughtful and gave him a dollar instead.
I think stereotype is something that makes people feel uncomfortable and not where they belong. People shouldn’t be judged because of who they are, every person is different, and people like them for who they are, and not someone they’re trying to be.

I thought Bennie was a 40 year old women because of the way she talked but she really was a 20 year women.
I thought Travis was white because he did not use slang and seemed very intellegent and i thought he was in his 14 but he really was a 10 year old boy who is very smart.
I thought Walter was a 10 year boy because he spoke poorly and he used a lot of slang but he really was a 40 year old man

A sterotype i used was slang i thought that all black people used slang but in realtiy some white gangsters and uneducated people used it also. I feel that sterotypes are not good because it is wrong to judge people based on apperence.

I predicted that Lena Younger would be a strong-willed, motherly person because of the way she expressed herself. She emphasized her gratitude for God and spoke of her husband in an affectionate manner. Her word choice seemed bold in a way; it gave me the impression of a woman who was very put-together and very strong.

While reading Beneatha’s dialogue, it seemed rather obvious that she was educated. She didn’t use slang or cut words short like some other members of her family did. The fact that she was educated also gave me a sense of her youth. Typically, younger members of families have had more chances to be educated than their elders. I pictured her as a teenager or older because her words wouldn’t be those of a child.

Ruth Younger played out as a protective, gentle young woman. She didn’t seem very educated because of her use of words.
For Lena, I used the stereotype of how a religious woman would be strong and proud, but it ended up being right. Stereotypes are not always true, and often lead to misjudging others. I’m sure lots of people have heard the one about how all African Americans love fried chicken and watermelon. Stereotypes are hurtful to many, used to put a label on people before one can get to know the person as an individual. There are stereotypes for people of different races, appearances, and financial situations as well. It is truly unfair that others can place people in groups before one gets to know them.

Walter: I thought Walter was that kind of guy that doesn't care about anything and if he does something wrong he blames other people but it ends up he is trying to make his families life better and loves his family

Bennie: I thought Bennie was educated because she didn't use any slang and also I thought she was like 40 but it ends up Bennie was like 20 years old.

Ruth: i thought Ruth was a lot older then she is and I thought she a good mom and parent.

The stereotype I used was slang because I thought that all black people back in the day used slang because Many of them were uneducated. But Bennie spoke perfectly fine and she went to school. I don't like stereotypes because it is judged someone on the way they look or act

  44. Nicolette Forgione Period 3 -
Lena: I said that she was smarter than the rest of her family and she cares about her mother and she's very confident about her beliefs and she stands by them. I didn't say that she believed in her brother and family because most of the quote was about her dream to become a doctor and her brother wanting her mom's money and religion. I also said that she was a smart and intelligent African American and it was rare to be smart as a colored woman at that time.

Walter: I said that he stands by what he does and when he wants something he won't stop until he gets it or accomplishes the task. I said that he probably never went to school because he used a lot of slang in his sentences and he seemed mad and frustrated by the words he used and the tone of the sentences.

Travis: I said that he was the one in the family who is in the middle of all the problems because he's never involved in any of them. I noticed that he seemed to be educated as well. I know this because his speech was good and he didn't really use any slang when he spoke. I predicted that he wasn't a kid but wasn't an adult so he was like a teenager but spoke older than he was. To me, he sounded a little bit conceited just because he was really smart and he didn't seem to care about the African Americans.

In my personal opinion, the stereotypes were all correct but I think it's unfair to see someone and automatically judge them by their appearance and use the same stereotype on other people. I think that if everyone in the world were perfect it would just be boring because being unique and different from everyone else makes you more interesting and makes you who you are and you should always be proud of that no matter what anyone else says. I find it sad that African Americans were and still are judged and hated just because of their skin color. The color of your skin doesn't make up who you are and I think that's the kind of knowledge people back then lacked.

Walter: I thought that Walter was the kind of guy that only cared about money and being better than the whites. I also said that he was a poor african american, uneducated man. I found out I was close to my prediction because he wants to own a business himself.

Beneatha: I was right about Beneatha because I said that she was educated and wanted to be a doctor and was african american.

Travis: I was also right about Travis because I said Travis was a young boy who was very energetic and was a very smart kid and really cared about school.

I stereotyped all blacks because i thought they were all educated because they all used slang language. But I found out that not all blacks use slang because Beneatha used no slang in her sentences because she was educated. i think stereotypes are a very terrible thing because I don't think it's fair to judge someone based on race, sexuality and wealth.

  46. 1.Beneatha: Beneatha seems to go against the idea of religion. Even though when she is older, she plans on being a doctor and she is also very ambitious. My impression of her was that she was unsuccessful, due to the fact that she didn’t believe in god.

2.Asagai: At first my impression of Asagai was that he was a young studious student, who cares about African American rights. My prediction of him was very close because he is a student who is committed to preserving the cultural heritage of his Nigerian people.

3.Walter: I thought Walter just cared about his friends and what they thought. When actually he is ambitious and loves his family. I thought this because was making big deal about a problem that didn’t matter.

I think on some part I was a bit stereotypical. I don’t think this stereotypes are not okay, but at the same time this was the first time we “met” the character so we didn’t really know who we were dealing with.

Travis i kinda had the right impression because i pitured him as a young boy who wanted to break the cycle in his family and be really educated and care alot about school.

Benitha i thought of a woman that is very educated baecause of the way she spoke with no slang.

Lena: I predicted that Lena was a 20 year old women who was thanking the lord for the oppurtunity she got.

Beneathea: I predicted that Beneathea was a random citezen who was friends with Walter.

I made the judgement of these three based upon there quotes, and how they said it, especially Lena. This makes me feel that stereotypes exist but i also feel that at the time the book was written, the stereotypes about there slang language was true mainly because of my predictions. Also I thaught Travis as white because he said they had to learn about colered people and there history in school n based on the time period, it made me think he was white, but i was extremely wrong about that.

Travis: I predict that Travis is a very well educated African american boy. I think he lives in a bad house with a great family and a okay life so he does not have many things to worry about except segregation. I also think he works hard and he is dedicated but might not be able to succeed because of his skin color.

Beneatha: I predict that Beneatha is a very dedicated and hard working african american that is not just facing segregation but also womans rights. I believe that she could do a lot of great things in life but will not be able to because of her skin color and sex.

Ruth: I predict that she lives in small house with her husband and children. She hopes to move out to a bigger place one day but people are not looking for african american workers.

I had to make different judgments of Ruth, Beneatha, and Travis with the small information given to me. This makes me realize how stereotypes happened in the past and they are still happening now. It was a lot worse in the 50's because people would judge your ability to work and how smart you were by your skin color and sex. I feel bad about this because people can be very smart and work very hard to get somewhere and then be turned down for reasons like race and sex. This is very wrong and i think it is good that we no longer stereotype people by the race or sex.

  52. My impression of Walter Lee was slightly different than what he actually was. Based on the quotes, he seemed a lot more aggressive and angry when really, he was just very ambitious and determined to improve his family with an idea he had to create a new business.
Travis was younger than what I predicted. I did see the energetic and confident personality he had, but I saw him as more mature based on the way he talked.
Beneatha was easy to picture. I definitely saw her strong personality through the way she talked. She had a better vocabulary, showing she was educated. For someone like her, in their family, being educated would mean they would have dreams or goals, and hers was to become a doctor, so that was predictable. The one thing I didn’t see though was her interest in African American roots. I saw her as more ambitious to move forward rather than being interested in the past.
Stereotyping people is something that people should try to avoid as much as possible. You can’t judge someone just based on what you think. Although we all know it’s bad, we still get a certain impression from people at first because we don’t know how they actually are. But I don’t stereotype people so I wasn’t able to make “pre-judgments” on the characters. I feel stereotyping people is just unnecessary and rude in some ways. It’s like you’re not giving people a chance to express who they really are.

Travis Younger: his family's pride and hope for the future; typically energetic ten-year-old
I thought Travis was a little kid who brave and hardworking but doesn’t think about the big picture
He is a normal 10 year old kid who’s too young to worry about the big picture I feel like that every 10 year old should have his energy and willingness to help people.\
Beneatha Younger: as ambitious as her brother, with plans to be a doctor; needs to express herself, as her varying hobbies indicate; interested in her African roots; 20’s
I thought that Beneatha was a confused about religion and she was full of ideas. It make me feel confused about how u can be 20 and still jumping around on hobbies.
Walter Lee Younger Jr: ambitious; loves his family; longs to prove his manhood by owning his own business; 30’s
Walter seems to me like a frustrated man and like he thinks very highly of himself and thinks that if something goes wrong it’s not his fault. He actually is trying hard and loves his family

Lena: I predicted that she was the head of the household that kept everything in place when it would come to things like her children not behaving, Walter and Ruth fighting, Travis being upset, and multiple money issues. Lena takes things in a practical way and puts her family first before everything. Money for Lena is not the most important thing in the world.

Walter: My impression of Walter is that he does not have a positive attitude about practical decisions but takes pride in his dreams. Another connection I have mad is that Walter in fact selfish and stubborn when it comes to not getting his way; which results into himself blaming everyone else.

Beneatha: I predicted that Beneatha does have a steady outline of how her brother thinks in her own personality. For example, she believes with what she wants and thinks outside the box. Both of them want to be independent and do what they want to do. However she doesn’t have the freedom due to racism, and sexism.
